New “Stuff” coming soon!

August 12th, 2008

Thanks to everyone who keeps writing in every day! I really wish we could respond to everyone’s request but right now we’ve been trying to focus on adding some features to the site that will (hopefully!) make it easy to use. So please bear with us and we’ll do our best to get to the certificate template requests as soon as we’re done!

A couple of things to look out for in the new version of MyAwardMaker.com are easier ways to browse and search through certificates. Since many of you have asked for sports certificates and certificates related to family and friends we’ll be adding separate categories for these. We’ve also been tagging the certificates with keywords so they’ll be easier to find.

Please keep writing in and let us know how else we can make things a little easier for you. We’re listening!

New Certificates for Teachers of Foreign Languages

July 3rd, 2008

We finally have a set of certificate templates that would work well for all our teachers of foreign languages, ESL/ESOL, Limited English Proficient and English Language Learners.

Every line of text in the certificate templates are completely customizable and should work with all character sets since they are in Adobe PDF format.

The certificates feature cool graphics and themes such as sports, peace, cooperation, the environment, character education, diversity and multiculturalism.

How to create your own certificates

July 1st, 2008

Every day we get emails from all over the world asking if we can design certificate templates with specific images, themes or titles. While I would like to be able to do every one of them it’s not always possible. Sometimes our users need a certificate right away and so I found this link from Microsoft Online that teaches you how to use PowerPoint to create your own certificates. It is pretty straight forward and easy to follow.

Creative Ways to Celebrate a Special Occasion - Part 1

June 24th, 2008

I like finding creative memorable ways to celebrate special occasions. I think people appreciate the thought and effort and often remember the celebration long after the date’s done. I’ve decided to share some of what I’ve done over the years in hopes that it will inspire others to look for unique and creative ways to celebrate with their friends and family.

These ideas can be applied to birthdays or any other milestone occasions like graduations, weddings or anniversaries. They are fairly simple to do (if you’re just a little bit tech savvy!) and often cost nothing but your time and creative juices!

So here’s the first:

Creative Captioning

Tools: PowerPoint or other Presentation type software, Laptop, Projector

Time: 1 - 2 hours

Steps:

1) Send an email out to the person’s friends and family asking them to share a special wish for the person, a special memory or what they admire about the person. Give them a deadline that is sooner than later.

2) While you’re waiting for the emails, you can create a template for your presentation. Yes, you can use the design templates that come pre-built but why be boring when you can be unique? Here’s how I do mine.

  • I draw a large rectangle that covers the entire slide and then choose a color. I make sure that each slide has a different color (You can stick to about 5 colors and then repeat the pattern)
  • Then using the word art tools I draw a giant white speech bubble that covers most of the slide.
  • I do this for each slide making sure to change the position of the speech bubble slightly so it creates interest. If you have time you could actually put photos of people to go with their comments.

3) Copy the wishes from the email into your slides. Use a nice clean font (not Times New Roman or Arial!!). I personally like one called Rockwell but there are dozens out there. You can use different fonts but I prefer to use 1 or 2 at the most.

4) Do a quick test run to make sure everything works OK. You can add music if you like but I’ve had some issues with this because if you’re projecting in a large room you’ll need speakers. I prefer to just have some music in the background.

5) Your slideshow is ready to present! Gather everyone around, do a little intro and then project your slideshow onto a blank wall. Watch the reactions!
I’ve done this several times and it’s been an absolute hit! Just be ready with a copy on CD so that the person can take it home with them. Trust me, this is something they’ll treasure for a long time!

Don’t forget to print out a certificate and have everyone sign it :)

Free Desktop Wallpaper Calendars

June 5th, 2008

I must confess I am a little addicted to a site called Smashing Magazine ever since I heard about them last year. It’s quite inspiring to see the work of talented artists from all around the world. Like taking a mini museum tour online!

Check out their post on these absolutely stunning free desktop wallpaper calendars. Can’t wait to download one for myself.

Completely Customizable Certificates - coming soon!

June 1st, 2008

Purely by accident I found a post written about MyAwardMaker.com in Italian. How exciting!

But wait…I used Babel to translate the page and realized to my utter embarrassment that while the blogger gave the site a nice review they also felt that the site be used for English language teachers only since even the blank certificates had English in them.

Duh! I felt like hitting my head on a wall.

How could someone like me with my background who is so focused on usability, inclusion and diversity issues have completely missed this one. A humbling experience indeed.

The more I learn, I realize the less I know.

So thanks to that blogger MyAwardMaker will soon feature certificates that allow all text fields to be completely customizable. These should work well for English Language Learners and speakers of other languages. Look out for these by next week. If you have other ideas please let me know. Thanks again to everyone who wrote in on Friday. Your comments are what keeps our team going!

Have a great week ahead!

A Slideshow to Celebrate Teachers

May 29th, 2008

I don’t know what it is but this past week I’ve been getting tons of emails from teachers about certificates they’d like us to create for their students. Many of the emails come in late at night…which makes me wonder - do teachers ever get a break?

So many of these wonderful individuals write in because they want to acknowledge their student’s work and achievements but how often do we acknowledge theirs?

So as a way to say “thank you” to teachers everywhere and to celebrate their dedication to nurturing students I created a little slideshow to celebrate teachers (Ok, I was trying to avoid doing laundry too!) You can view it by clicking here.

And to those wonderful teachers out there who helped me do what I’m doing today…Mrs. Rodrigo - for encouraging me to write, Mr. Binder - for helping me put together my first site, Dr. Hamza & Dr. Weber for helping me see the power of technology to transform the way we educate each other…a big LONG overdue THANK YOU!

How do you motivate an 11 year old?

May 29th, 2008

I’m a big supporter of positive reinforcement. Pets, kids, adults, everyone needs it. As my co-worker said last week when I sent her a note thanking her for something “no one ever gets tired of hearing they did a good job!”

But when it comes to some kids though it can sometimes be a little challenging. Sure you can use TV time as a “carrot” and withholding their gaming consoles as a “stick”… but what do you do when this doesn’t work?

Yes, a cool certificate will motivate a student for doing a great job on something (sorry, had to plug a link there!) but how do you get them to even do that something in the first place?

My friend’s son used to be an A+ student. Since moving to a ‘better school’ he has suddenly exhibiting signs of what the psychologist has diagnosed as ADHD. He reads at a High School level and is completely bored doing worksheets and assignments. He can’t get into the gifted program because his grades are so bad. His parents are at their wits end.

He is one of the most intelligent kids I know. He and I can have a discussion on cell phone features and interface design and websites and you’d think you were talking to an adult. I’m afraid he’s going to start shutting down.

Any ideas?

The Certificate Blog is Here!

March 24th, 2008

Yes, My Award Maker finally has a blog. I’ve really wanted to set one up for a while and thanks to Naz, we finally have one.

Heard from a teacher in the UK this week about how she had used My Award Maker to create certificates for her 2nd graders. She hadn’t been able to find exactly what she wanted so she’d printed one out, stuck a different label on top and made a photocopy. Very creative!

One thing I’m looking forward to this week is adding more school certificates with cute graphics for lower elementary students. I’m thinking of stars, monkeys, butterflies, bees, planes and trains…

I was concerned about issues with printing graphics with lots of color but it looks like people don’t mind so be sure to check back in the next few days for more updates.

Free ClipArt

March 24th, 2008

It is so hard to find cute clip art that is free for both personal and commercial use. However, NoeticArt has a pretty cool selection of tongue-in-cheek (pen-in-hand?) illustrations of animals, transportation, people, etc. You can download the entire collection if you click on the “Whole Taco” link. And it has one of the most engaging terms of use agreements that I’ve ever read! :)
